Since President Nixon declared "war on cancer" back in 1971, it is common place to hear people talk about disease, especially cancer, in terms of "fighting" it.
You often hear "they lost their battle to" or "they lost their fight to" or "they beat cancer" or "they kicked cancer's ------ "

Cancer, as with other disease, is something people live with, deal with, experience. Sometimes, people die from cancer, just as sometimes people die from any disease. Using battle language around cancer, disease, or death can be harmful and insensitive - leaving the person with cancer (or disease) feeling like they aren't/weren't strong enough, or they failed themselves/others, or they are giving up/gave up if the disease progresses out of a person's control and they die.
