Paul Shaffer's "Bermuda" Collection on Letterman, 1982–84

The complete collection of Paul Shaffer's "Bermuda."

1. March 18, 1982. Dave invites Paul to introduce the band. Paul does his Paul Anka impression announcing guitarist Steve Khan (subbing for Hiram Bullock) in what sounds like a precursor to "Bermuda."

2. July 26, 1982. The show returns from a week break, but Dave is "still on vacation," so Larry "Bud" Melman fills in as guest-host. Into the middle of the show, Dave returns; Paul begins to talk about his vacation week in Bermuda, but Dave cuts him off. It sounds as though Dave had heard Paul's new classic tune before the show, but here, on air, there doesn't appear to be enough time for Paul to perform it. That's rectified the following night.

3. July 27, 1982. Paul's finally given eonough time to discuss his vacation in Bermuda, and he debuts his homage to the island.

4. July 28, 1982. Dave asks Paul for an encore performance.

5. August 4, 1982. Dial-It-Services, Call #4. Dial-a -Song-about-Bermuda.

6. August 5, 1982. Another request from Dave.

7. September 2, 1982. Viewer Mail #3. Paul sings an expanded version, accompanied with slides.

8. October 5, 1982. The World of the Future, featuring the "TV of the Future," with an elderly Paul. The show closes with a full-screen reprise.

9. December 28, 1982 (taped December 14). Paul announces his new, expensive video debuting on MTV, introduced by veejay Mark Goodman.

10. December 23, 1982. Dave's Christmas present for Paul, featuring the Late Night Choir (ten students from the High School of Music and Art).

11. February 16, 1983. Paul plays a little "The Way We Were," but the audience demands "Bermuda" instead, and Paul obliges.

12. May 4, 1983. Paul talks about "The Magic Show," then another audience request for "Bermuda."

13. November 23, 1984. It's Late Night's Rock and Roll Special, so Paul performs "Bermuda" on the show for the last time.
