Let's start with the MacBook air line up. The M1 MacBook air and M2 Macbook air. The M1 air is Apple’s cheapest laptop. The M2 MacBook air is a redesign of that machine. I think the best value when it comes to Apple laptops right now is the M1 MacBook air. It’s the oldest laptop in the apple lineup but it’s also on sale pretty often. You can find deals ranging from 750-900$ USD. The M1 air is a crazy good value and it’ll meet most people’s email surfing, video watching, and school work. The M2 MacBook air is successor to this laptop, and has a newer design. Meaning if you do purchase the M1 MacBook air, you’re missing out on the new design apple started using for their laptops. But overall, this is probably the best machine for those on a budget, because it provides you with a great machine that performs 90% the same as the newer model, but for much less.

Now the M2 MacBook air. This laptop takes everything that was great about the M1 Macbook air, and shoves it in a more premium package. What I mean by that is the design aligns closer to Apple’s latest Macbook pros, with a big notch and squared off design, it has the M2 chip, a 1080p webcam and a magsafe 3 port, just to name a few upgrades. The magsafe 3 ports gives you an additional way to charge your macbook. It’s a magnetic charging cable that snaps off if your cable gets snagged on something preventing your charging cable from dragging the entire laptop down with it. And it also gives you access to use the 2 remaining thunderbolt and usb 4 ports for whatever you need while you’re using magsafe to charge your laptop. But you can still charge the laptop through the usb-4 ports if you need to. So you get more flexibility with this laptop and a built-in safety feature. I like to describe this laptop as the MacBook air Luxe. Because it’s almost the same thing as the M1 Air, just slightly nicer all around. So, I think the M2 Macbook air is for those who fit in that M1 Macbook air category but want something that has fancier quality of life.

The 13in M2 MacBook pro. This is the cheapest macbook Pro in apple’s lineup and it’s in a weird position. Apple sells two line of laptops. The air, and the pro. The airs focus on being thin and good as the average person’s computer but the pros focus more on higher end specs and have a price tag to match. This 13in MacBook pro is neither. It’s really hard for me to figure out who this laptop is for. It’s a faster machine than the M2 macbook air. But then it lacks in other ways, and you’d probably start looking at the 14 or 16in macbook pro because they provide so much more performance and features. It’s like this laptop wants to be a pro machine. But it’s not. It’s more of a slightly more performance oriented MacBook Air.

Okay, then there’s Apple’s 14 and 16in MacBook pro lineup. I’m gonna talk about these machines as a group. Because for the most part, these laptops are really really similar except for their body, screen, and body size. Overall, spec for spec, you’re paying about $200 more for that larger 16in body. Okay. The MacBook Pro 14/16inches are by far Apple’s most power user oriented laptops. This lineup is the only one with multiple external monitor support. If performance, ports and external monitors are important to you. The MacBook Pros are the ones to look at. These MacBook Pros are much thicker and heavier than the air. The MacBook Air machines, the M1 and M2 so much nicer to carry around different places with you and saves you weight in your backpack. The 14in MacBook pro just feels hefty, but the 16in, feels like a brick. So when it comes to deciding between the 14in or 16in? I’d take the 14in pro and if I need more monitor space, I can use my ipad as a secondary display or plug into multiple monitors. To me, the 16in doesn’t feel like a laptop anymore, just a portable monster of a computer. The 14in is much more one handable, and still decently easy to carry around. The 16in is a little more difficult to carry with you on the go, and might not fit smaller backpacks in their laptop sleeves. So really, to me, the 16in only makes sense if you desperately need that extra screen real estate and battery on the go.
