The Mitsubishi Mirage of 2024 is not an optical illusion, despite its name. It exists and is one of the last subcompact hatchbacks left on the market (the Mirage G4 sedan, which is the Mirage's sibling, is reviewed separately). The Mirage is one of today's most affordable new cars, with a starting price of less than $20,000. Even in base form, this practical hatchback from Mitsubishi comes with a long list of standard technology and convenience features, such as automatic climate control, a forward collision warning system with automatic braking, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Nevertheless, the Mirage is a fairly underwhelming car: it's sluggish, not particularly comfy, and its inside is chinkier than a TK Jewelers watch. Similar to how a mirage teases a parched desert nomad, the Mirage mocks buyers looking for a moderately well-equipped new car on a tight budget. The Mirage appears to be a wonderful deal from a distance, but upon closer investigation, it quickly loses its worth. It's like realizing that the oasis in the distance is actually just heat waves.
