(14 Feb 1979) RR7907A PAKISTAN BHUTTO WAITING TO HANG

In November 1974, the father of an anti-government
Pakistani MP was shot in an ambush. In 1977 the
country's President was accused of plotting the
ambush and today that man is confined to a prison
cell, waiting to hang. Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto -arguably
Pakistan's most successful politician and statesman -
is the centre of a storm. Inside and outside Pakistan,
his supporters are decrying the trial that sent Bhutto
to the death cell. They're also threatening revolution,
possibly civil war, if Bhutto is not released and free
elections held by the present military government led
by General Zia.
