How can we make our cities more resilient? Over the past decade, a new field has emerged called urban resilience. In this fascinating talk, Michael Berkowitz suggests that the key to building resilient cities starts with a shift in the way we approach risks and opportunities in order to not think about these as separate things. Instead of a pandemic that requires pandemic solutions, or heat waves that require heat wave solutions, Michaels presents us with a blueprint for building resilient cities that starts by exploring the web of connected risks and opportunities. By focusing on interventions that address multiple challenges, we learn the ways that communities can reduce fragility and strengthen themselves to be better able to respond whatever comes their way.
