Kaushik's involvement in espionage began when he was recruited by the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), while he was still a student. Trained extensively in covert operations and spycraft, Kaushik was sent to Pakistan in the early 1970s as an undercover agent. He adopted the identity of a Pakistani national named Nabi Ahmed Shakir and successfully integrated himself into Pakistani society.

After a trial, he was sentenced to death on charges of espionage and subsequently spent over a decade in prison. Despite India's efforts to secure his release, Kaushik remained imprisoned until his death in 2001 under mysterious circumstances, believed to be due to illness.
