About Jonathan Leach:
Jonathan Leach is an R&B soul-singer, pianist, and beat-boxer based out of Lincoln, Nebraska. His lyric and vocal-driven music is concentrated on telling meaningful stories from his life experiences that are real, raw, and deeply rooted in personal truth. The music he produces is rather complex and ingenuitive in nature, in part because of the way Leach builds his songs around his vocals.

Jonathan began writing his own songs when he was in 7th grade, because, “It was the most correct thing I could do. It was time to start trying to create, and I wanted to do it desperately, to be a part of the creation process of music. I bought a notebook and I decided this was the notebook I was going to write all my songs in.”

When Leach sang his first song to his dad, his dad said, “I just don’t believe it. You sound fine, but you gotta make me believe it, man.” That was a defining moment that forever shaped Jonathan into the artist he is today. He went home and tried to write more deeply and more honestly. That was the day that the narrative of his music became what it is today: being a lyricist before a performer, saying something that's worth saying and honest.

As the new Music Director at City Impact, now Jonathan has the opportunity to influence young people. Through music, he is able to provide a space for them to worship, be free, and let go of their inhibitions. For those with creative aspirations, he also gets to demonstrate in real life that you can live your dreams. As a professional, full-time musician who actually looks like the kids who go there, he gives them hope that their dreams don’t have to be minimized just because somebody says so.

Today Jonathan is focused mainly on writing, recording, and putting his original music out there, though the direction of his writing is shifting slightly. In more recent years his lyrics have been introspectively focused on current things happening in his present-day life—a form of journaling in which he explains to himself what’s going on in the world around him. He’s shifting from just being empathetic to the human condition in his writing to being empathetic to himself, and telling stories from his past.

Derek Wright, from the local Lincoln band Head Change, said his friend Zach referred to Jonathan as “The milkman, because he delivers the cream.”
