2.5 years ago, on 22nd Dec 2018, a mother hailing from a small village in Madhya Pradesh had given birth to a preterm baby born in 26 weeks weighing only 490 grams. He was admitted to Aastha Children Hospital, Nagpur and after continuous hard work and efforts of 81 days, the baby was given a new lease of life by Dr. Praveen Khapekar & his team. The baby is now aged 2 ½ years, physically and mentally fit and living a completely healthy life like other kids.

Across the globe, preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal deaths with one-third of deaths happening in the first month of life. Moreover, preterm birth is known to be the cause of at least 50% of all neonatal deaths. Being born premature, also increases neonatal infections which further increases the chances of infant mortality. In addition to its signified contribution to infant mortality rate, the effect of preterm birth amongst some survivors may continue throughout their life i.e., neuro-development impairment, risk of cerebral palsy, learning impairment and visual disorders. Long term physical consequences include - a higher risk of stunting, obesity, diabetes and hypertension. Therefore, less the gestation age during birth, more the frequency & severity of adverse outcomes increases. As a result, these effects exert a heavy economic burden on family, and decrease the overall health system levels of the nation.

In the last decade, there has been a huge advancement in quality NICU care, so more and more micro preemie (babies with weight less than 1 kg) are able to survive and live a normal life ahead. This can prove as a boon for those parents who have given birth to preterm babies.

On similar grounds, a baby, born at 26 weeks of gestation, with a birth weight of only 490 grams got a new lease of life by Dr. Praveen Khapekar & his team at Aastha Children Hospital, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur. This baby was managed by non-invasive & aggressive nutrition approach and finally after 81 days with a weight of 2 kgs was discharged happily. Now he is 2 ½ years old and living a completely normal life. He is able to walk, run, see different colors, can speak fluently & also have good physical health like other children of his age.

Dr. Praveen Khapekar says, ‘Saving this kind of babies require huge determination and tireless efforts day and night, and I am proud to say that we could actually do that’.
