Join Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian and clown living in 1980's Gotham, as he descends into madness and insanity with a smile on his face. Suffering from a neurological disorder that causes him to laugh uncontrollably, Arthur is also subject to abuse and bullied which eventually drives him to murder, experiencing a chasm between who he is and who he should be for him to be fully accepted as a member of society. As a result, he becomes somewhat ostracized, forcing Arthur to hide behind the mask of a clown and ultimately become the vengeful anarchist known as the Joker.
