[Yesterday, a terrified mama and her extremely fragile newborn puppies were pulled from the woods in Cleveland, Texas, where we believe they had been heinously and illegally dumped. Today, they made it safely to their long-term foster home. But this rescue came at a heartbreaking cost.


Because of the condition they were in, we just lost a fourth puppy last night. Seven tiny lives remain, and while they are eating and showing no immediate signs of distress, they are NOT in the clear. They are still fighting for their future. The four puppies who were tragically lost were not showing immediate signs of an emergency, so we are not slowing down in our efforts to ensure ALL her remaining puppies are healthy and okay. Because of their mama’s lack of nutrients, because of the circumstances in which they were born, they are not in very good shape at all. They are not stable right now.



What’s worse is, we believe that this mama was intentionally dumped in the woods while pregnant. That’s a heinous crime. Someone may have left her alone, exposed, and vulnerable, and guess how she responded? She responded by doing EVERYTHING she could to protect her babies inside of her. What did we do to deserve dogs?


But her fight, her resilience, her strength would not have been enough long-term. That’s why we’re so thankful that a compassionate Good Samaritan had spotted her and although she didn’t let them get even remotely close, this person had been leaving out food for her and even attempted to set traps so she could be caught and give birth safely inside a home. But fear kept her from going in.


When a local trapper with more experience than the Good Samaritan spotted the puppies, the urgency ramped up a notch. The odds of survival for those little ones were painfully slim. With time running out and trapping no longer an option, a team came together to dart mom safely. Several local trappers then carried her, exhausted, out of the woods and into safety with her babies.


That night, a temporary foster stepped in without hesitation. She bottle-fed the puppies while the sedation wore off so mom could nurse again. She monitored temperatures, checked vitals, and stayed by their side through the darkest moment, when we lost another baby. This foster didn’t ask for anything in return. She simply showed up because these lives mattered, because someone needed to show up for them.


Then, without hesitation, one of our long-term fosters saw the call for help and opened their home to this family. Taking in a mama and her puppies is an enormous responsibility, filled with sleepless nights, constant monitoring and ongoing medical and supply needs that completely derails having a normal life. Out of pure love, our community answered the call and stepped up.


This family survived because strangers chose compassion. Now, they need continued support to keep fighting, and the beautiful thing is, all YOU need to do to help is donate.
