Explosions are caused by a rapid increase in the volume of particles and the release of energy in an extreme manner. Explosions usually generate high temperatures and a shock wave. The shock wave provides most of the destructive force for the explosion.
The most common explosions are produced by a chemical reaction that occurs very quickly. This type of chemical reaction usually involves a rapid and violent combustion reaction that produce a large amount of hot gas. These reactions require a fuel that contains stored energy, oxygen to support the combustion, and some sort of initiator. The speed of the reaction is what distinguishes an explosive reaction from an ordinary combustion reaction.
While it might seem unlikely, dust particles can actually serve as a very explosive fuel. It just depends on the source of the dust particles. If the dust particles come from materials that are loaded with energy like coal, sugar, flour or pollen, then the dust can be explosive if it becomes airborne where it can react with oxygen. These explosions can be surprisingly powerful and destructive.
For example, on February 7th, 2008 a huge explosion and fire occurred at the Imperial Sugar Refinery in Savannah Georgia. This massive explosion was caused by the ignition of sugar dust suspended in the air of the refinery. The blast killed 14 people and totally destroyed the refinery.
In a similar manner, highly combustible grain dust can explode when the grain is transported into storage structures known as grain elevators and coal dust within coal mines can also be very explosive if enough of the dust becomes airborne.
