Steve Smith, EP at Beakus in London: "This was a commission from Sky to support the launch of Showtime's new drama series 'Penny Dreadful', that star created by John Logan and based on so-called 'penny dreadful' horror books of the 19th Century.

"We were asked to create three animated virals, one for each book. Director Gergely Wootsch had previously created dark, heavily textured animation for an award-winning short film 'The Hungry Corpse' as well as for the music video 'Marshal Dear' for Savages, and his work struck a chord with John Logan. So much so that very little altered through the production as John and Sky were happy to watch Gergely breath gothic life into his animations.

"We began brainstorming ideas around how the books came about and creating a variety of style frames before Sky delivered Matthew Sweet's voiceover to us.

"Gergely edited the voice to length, choosing sound bites that would help frame the animation as he worked on the storyboards and animatics. The schedule was incredibly tight: five weeks in all.

"Gergely works in a hybrid of 2D and 3D, dropping in and out of each platform as needed. Much of the texture and illustration is digitally created with some exceptions, especially the stop-motion rose in 'Dorian Gray'."
