The Vigil Angels Who Bring Dignity To The Dying

The Vigil Angels is a programme by Singapore’s HCA Hospice Care that provides free basic care for terminally-ill patients in their last days at home - making sure they go to their rest in dignity and comfort. It also leaves their loved ones a beautiful image to remember them by.

Foong Yuet Foong, a full-time graphic designer, has been volunteering with Vigil Angels since 2019. It means sometimes taking urgent leave to respond to calls for her service. Each visit is led by a trained HCA nurse, and includes massages, grooming and a gentle wash.

But interacting with the dying often takes its emotional toll on Yuet Foong - especially when she becomes ever more aware of her parents’ mortality. When her father is diagnosed with kidney cancer, she grapples with coming to terms with losing him.
