There are misconceptions about aluminum bus bar and copper bus bar, and some may even draw a conclusion that copper bus bar is certainly superior to aluminum bus bar without specifying circumstances or conditions. But the fact is aluminum bus bar is the best choice in certain application scenarios:

1. On one hand, for the same size of the two kinds of material, aluminum bus bar conductivity is only about 65% of copper bus bar. So in this sense, copper bus bar totally outperforms aluminum bus bar. But on the other hand, aluminum material is 70% lighter than copper bus bar of the same size. So when you compare conductivity by weight, you will find that aluminum is actually 50 percent more conductive per kg. In this case, aluminum bus bar gets the upper hand.

2. Aluminum bus bar has much lower price than copper bus bar in general. That’s because aluminum is rich in nature and is much easier to get. What’s more, copper market is volatile and its price is more likely to be affected by market demand. More specifically, when we try to laser weld cell batteries and busbars, it is more energy-saving if we are using aluminum busbars because aluminum requires a lower temperature to melt than copper.

3. Aluminum bus bar has plenty of tensile strength to withstand thermal expansion strain. What’s more, high quality, high strength aluminum can have mechanical resistance up to 530Newton/mm². And the aluminum material is more fatigue-resistant and corrosion-resistant than copper material. Even if there is corrosion in the aluminum material, it is very easy to stripe it off.
