Picture Framing falls into two categories. There is standard framing and there is custom or conservation framing. Standard framing is generally what you buy off the shelf. They have a wood backing, a glass front, and a frame. Normally, the photograph goes in directly against the glass or against the glass and onto the wooden backing depending on the frame. The longevity of the print is compromised with standard framing because firstly you’ll get acid burn from the wooden backing and also moisture entering through the back.
The moisture becomes trapped between the layers, dissolves the surface of the paper and sticks the picture to the glass, making it very difficult to remove again without damaging the original photograph.
Custom or conservation framing avoids these common mistakes by thinking ahead - for example, the issue of the picture sticking to the glass is avoided, carefully spacing the print to hold it off the glass on top, leaving room for the air to circulate, and set it upon a mat-board or an acid-free backing behind the print. Another cheaper option is to laminate the print. Your print can last significantly longer with a little care.
