What’s up? Johnny here! Today I’m going to show you how to make a The Weeknd type-beat. I’ll show you what instruments and samples to look for and later Anthony will show us how to harmonize a bassline with MIDI chords.

The Weeknd has always used a pretty distinctive sound—generally there’s always a bassy synth, some old-school Linndrum style drums and a washy synth pad.

I’m going to go through each step of making a Weeknd type beat. We’ll start by finding some synth drums on LANDR Samples and then I’ll use a Juno synth plugin to make the bass and melody lines.

You’ll also see how Anthony uses the main notes in the bassline to figure out a pad harmony.
