October 26, 2021, Helena, AR -- Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a national animal protection nonprofit, joined BISSELL Pet Foundation to lead a huge rescue of over 400 animals from the failed Humane Society of the Delta in Helena, Ark. at the request of the city’s Mayor, with support from other animal rescue agencies, after the Humane Society of the Delta director was arrested on 285 counts of felony animal cruelty. All of the animals will be evaluated and transported to placement partners around the country who will find homes for them.

Prior to the arrest, the Helena-West Helena Police had been called to the property of the Humane Society of the Delta. When officers arrived they were overcome by the stench and horrified to see hundreds of animals in filthy cages and kennels and running loose around the trash-strewn property that was infested with rats. A search warrant was issued and after searching the property and arresting the director for animal cruelty, the city’s Mayor shut the shelter down and reached out for help.

The animals from this rescue, dubbed Operation Shutdown, were transported to placement partners around the country, including ARC’s Rescue Operation Center in Lebanon, TN. Each animal will receive a complete veterinary exam, appropriate vaccinations, and any necessary medical treatments.

ARC performed Operation Shutdown in partnership with BISSELL Pet Foundation, Humane Society of Tulsa, Nashville Humane Association, Cabot Animal Services, Humane Society of Independence County, Arkansas Pet Savers, Animal Rescue New Orleans, ALIVE Rescue Memphis, and Memphis Animal Services.
