In the Philmont Collection being held at the National Scouting Museum, we have several artifacts that represent the history of logging and railroading here in Colfax County. These items help tell the story of the Cimarron and Northwestern Railway Company and the Continental Tie and Lumber Company and their significance to the history of Cimarron and Philmont.

Three former Philmont Staff members, Tucker Baker, Matthew Hauser, and Trevor Lombardi, wrote a book called “Pride and Glory: The Cimarron and Northwestern Railway Company.” Following their experiences as Seasonal Staff members at Metcalf Station, their book gives quite possibly the most complete look at the history of the Cimarron and Northwestern and the man who made both companies possible.

This week is part one of our interview with Trevor and Tucker, where we learn about how the railway came to be, why Cimarron was chosen as its starting point, and how technology helped them overcome many of the challenges faced when building a railroad in rural Northeast New Mexico.
