Yarn suggestions:
-Loops and Threads bulky #5 yarn I bought at Michaels or use two strands of #4 yarn. Choose any brand of a bulky #5 yarn. Check pattern below for amount needed for each size.

KNITTED MITTENS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Using chunky yarn and knitted in the round
SIZING: toddler (child, adult S, M, L)
a) fits hand: 5 (6, 7, 7.75, 8.5)” around
b) mitten length: 7.25 (8.5, 10.5, 12, 13)” from cuff to finger tips (adjustable)
c) cuff length: 2.5 (2.5, 3, 4, 4)” (adjustable)
ABBRVIATIONS:
BOR- beginning of round dec - decrease(d) inc - increase(d) k-knit k2tog - knit 2 sts together
m1 - make one stitch by preferred method p-purl PM - place marker SM - slip marker
ssk - slip 2 sts (one at a time), knit 2 slipped sts together
YARN: #5 chunky weight: 70 (80, 120, 150, 190) yards
CIRCULAR NEEDLES: US #4 / 3.5mm and US #7 / 4.5mm
GUAGE: 14 sts & 22 rounds = 4” (all gauges given in stockinette on larger needles)
NOTIONS: stitch markers, darning needle, scissors to cut yarn

PATTERN:
-With smaller needles 3.5mm cast on: 22 (26, 28, 32, 36) sts.
-Place BOR marker and join for working in the round. Work in 1x1 rib (k1, p1) until piece
measures 2.5 (2.5, 3, 4, 4)” from cast on.
-SWITCH to larger needles 4.5mm
-Knit 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) rounds.
THUMB GUSSET:
-Set up round: m1, k1, m1, PM, knit to end [2 sts inc]
-Rounds 1 and 2: knit
-Round 3: m1, knit to marker, m1, SM, knit to end of round [2 sts inc]
-Work rounds 1-3 a total of 3 (3, 4, 4, 5) times; 9 (9, 11, 11, 13) sts between BOR and marker.
-Next round: Place sts between BOR and marker on waste yarn, remove marker. Slide needle off waste yarn sts to finish knitting mitt portion. Cast on 1 stitch, knit to end of round
-Continue knitting every round until piece measures 1.75 (3, 3.75, 4, 4.5)” from end of thumb gusset.
DECREASE SET UP: k11 (13, 14, 16, 18), PM, knit to end and PM if desired.
-Round 1: [k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, k1] twice [4 sts dec]
-Work round 1 a total of 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) times; 10 (10, 8, 8, 8) sts remain.
-Break yarn, leaving a 6” tail to thread through remaining live sts. Pull tight to close top of mitten and tie off.
THUMB:
-Place held sts back on larger needles dividing the stitches on your needles with needle ends pointing to the right. Pick up 2 sts from body of mitten, 1 on each side. Knit 1 round joining the round. 11 (11, 13, 13, 15) sts.
-K2 tog and knit to BOR
-Knit every round until thumb measures 1 (1.25, 1.75, 2, 2.25)” from pick up.
-Next round: [k2tog] all the way around. 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) sts remain.
-Break yarn, leaving a 6” tail to thread through remaining live sts. Pull tight to close top of thumb.
FINISHING:
There may be a small hole at the base of the thumb. Use the yarn tail to sew up the hole.
Even your cast on edge when you tie off.
