Oct. 19, 2022: An Intellectual History of Development from the 1940s to the Present

Pacific Leadership Fellow David M. Malone discussed international development and what it aims to achieve: the progressive improvement of livelihood and quality of life in developing countries. Though we sometimes imagine that a unified theory of development has emerged, development theory and practice are actually hotly contested fields, and waves of new thinking have overtaken earlier ideas roughly every decade or so since 1945. This iterative approach has allowed for mistakes to be corrected, but we have not yet identified the Holy Grail with respect to development ideas and practice. In this talk, Malone will aim to stimulate ideas rather than reach for certainties or sure-fire recipes.

Speakers:
David M. Malone, Under-Secretary-General, United Nations, Canada
Elizabeth Lyons, Associate Professor, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (Moderator)

Cosponsors: Global Forum at International House
