VETERAN Queensland newsreader Bruce Paige has pulled the plug on his television career, after presenting the weeknight news on Channel Nine for the past 14 years.

Paige, uncharacteristically absent from the desk for the 6pm news on Monday and Tuesday, told viewers last night that he and his family had been contemplating life after television.

"After 40-plus years in this business, and it really is one I love, that is a very big thing to get your head around. But I've decided it's time to start exploring the world, and I want to let you know that I'll be stepping down from this chair in a few weeks," he said.

Nine news director Lee Anderson described Bruce as a broadcast legend while Nine chief executive David Gyngell reflected on the legacy he left in Queensland.

He sat alongside the likes of southern network stalwarts such as Brian Henderson and Brian Naylor as one of Australia's great newsreaders, Mr Gyngell said.

Paige, 60, began his career at a regional radio station in 1966 before moving to a nearby television station three years later.

He worked for the ABC for almost 15 years and joined Channel Nine Queensland midway though 1985 for five years before a brief stint with Channel Ten.

He returned to Nine in 1994 to take over weekend newsreader duties. Within 12 months, Paige was presenting the weeknight news bulletin with Heather Foord, and from 2002 Jillian Whiting, before Foord resumed the role in late 2004 and Melissa Downes followed.
