We take a very short motif comprising three notes and consider the impact of harmonising in seven different ways. Starting on the tonic chord and treating the second note as a passing note/ passing tone we explore seven different possibilities for the successive chord, considering the impact of major chords, minor chords, extended chords and chords implying more colourful tonality. The music composition lesson offers composers the opportunity to consider how short motifs can be coloured in different ways harmonically as the motif repeats during a piece.
