Generation Loss Prevention for Limerick Digital Modernization Project

Modernizing plants with digital upgrades is becoming essential but sometimes those upgrades take a good while to carry out, which means expensive downtime.

That was looking to become a big problem when the two units at Constellation’s Limerick plant were due to be upgraded – specifically because the upgrades were set to extend the scheduled outages by a full 10 days.

However, the Constellation team at Limerick – working with experts from GE-Hitachi on the reactor side and GNF on the fuels side – took a different tack. They proved to the NRC they could perform the work at 90% power.

Taking this approach prevented the loss of generating revenue of between $10-20 million for each unit
