In Surla village, the controversy over illegal tree cutting continues to stir anger among locals. Despite 50 days having passed since the issue was raised, no decisive action has been taken by the authorities.

During a recent Gram Sabha meeting, villagers strongly criticized the Panchayat Mandal and even registered a protest against the District Collector. The residents had demanded a joint inspection, but officials have failed to deliver any concrete outcome so far.

The case dates back to the last week of September, when the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Bicholim intervened and issued a notice to stop the tree felling immediately, barring entry to the area and ordering strict action against those responsible.

While reports have been prepared by the Forest Department, SDO, and Mamlatdar, none of these have been shared with the Panchayat or the complainant.

Due to the Panchayat Mandal’s inaction, Pramod Narvekar, President of the Surla Biodiversity Committee, has escalated the matter to the Goa State Biodiversity Board, demanding that all related departments submit their reports without delay.

Villagers, including Uday Natekar of the Village Development Committee, have accused the administration of negligence and warned of serious consequences if swift action is not taken.
