The Splitting of the Moon (Shaqq-ul-Qamar) is one of the greatest miracles of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, witnessed openly by the people of Makkah. When the Quraysh demanded a supernatural sign to prove his prophethood, the Prophet ﷺ pointed towards the sky — and by Allah’s command, the full moon split into two distinct parts, each appearing on opposite sides of Mount Hira.

Multiple companions saw this miracle with their own eyes, including Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud (RA). This event is authentically recorded in the most reliable sources of Islam — Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi. The Qur’an also preserved this miracle forever in Surah Al-Qamar:

“The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.” (Qur’an 54:1)

Although the Quraysh tried to dismiss it as magic, travelling caravans from distant lands confirmed that they too witnessed the moon split, proving it was a real cosmic event, not sorcery.
Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir, Imam Razi, and Ibn Hisham affirm that this miracle is authentic, decisive, and unanimously accepted through Qur’anic evidence, multiple eyewitness reports, and continuous transmission.

The Splitting of the Moon remains a timeless proof of the truthfulness of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the limitless power of Allah.
