“Death Pause” was born of my aforementioned affinity for sustained chords on the piano. When I first brought this song to Doug he commented on how much he loved the deep pauses in it. I was pleased to hear this assessment as I had myself been referring to the longest of those deep pauses ( at the end of the chord progression) as the “death” pause. A pause long enough to make you wonder if it was the end. The song is about realizing how much life I had missed out on for being isolated and insulated from everyone around me. Even when I was with others I was alone inwardly. I couldn’t be bothered to socialize or participate in life if it didn’t serve me and my own interests. I tolerated forced intrusions on my time and being by others gracefully, I thought, biding my time until I could be alone again with my thoughts and dreams and visions. I told myself I was sensitive and empathic and, while that may have been true, I was also completely self-absorbed. This is the realization I was coming to as I wrote this song. What was really striking to me was that, for the first time in my life, I was acknowledging that this might not be a good thing. I was fear-bound inside. A still life. But I was noticing how much I longed to be connected to the world outside my window. I hope you are all maintaining your sanity in the face of the great unknowns the world has been flooded with these last many months. I hope our doors and windows and ears are open to hear whatever calls might be coming to us now from that beyond. However dark the hour, I feel it is a privilege to be living through such unprecedented vulnerability together. - Chris Simpson
