Balagezong (巴拉格宗), located in Yunnan(云南), is a part of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, situated about 31 miles northwest of Shangri-La(香格里拉) County. This area is celebrated for its ancient Bala Village, hospitable residents, sacred snow mountains, and the breathtaking Shangri-La Grand Canyon, offering a glimpse into a pure land rich in Tibetan culture.

The area spans 43,490 acres, with only a portion open to tourists. Attractions include the Bala Village, nestled on the mountainside and known for its secluded Tibetan wood houses and colorful sutra streamers. The Shangri-La Grand Canyon, believed to be the inspiration for the Blue Moon Valley in the novel "Lost Horizon," features a unique vertical climate and a diverse terrain that creates a natural cliff painting. The Heaven-leading Gorge, or Tongtian Gorge, leads to the sacred Balagezong Snow Mountain, presenting a narrow and deep gorge where only a strip of sky is visible overhead.

Balagezong Snow Mountain, standing as a holy mountain among Tibetans, is the highest in Shangri-La County at 17,408 feet. It is revered for its three snow-clad peaks, believed to be the incarnations of three daughters of a mountain god. The area also features 18 plateau lakes and the Shangri-La Stupa, a natural stupa surrounded by mountains resembling a Lama and an unfolding sutra, adding to its spiritual significance.

Access to Balagezong is facilitated by tourism buses from the north gate of Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La County, with a round trip fare of CNY 50. The area is open from 8:00 to 19:00, with an admission fee of CNY 210, which includes the entrance ticket and shuttle bus service. A visit to Balagezong offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and spiritual tranquility, making it a must-visit for those exploring Yunnan's diverse landscapes.
