Following a recent collision involving Chinese and Philippine vessels near the Scarborough Shoal, China has asserted that the Philippines should bear responsibility for the damage, according to reports published by Chinese news agencies. China claims the Philippines' actions in dispatching vessels to the area constitute a violation of Chinese sovereignty and a threat to maritime stability.
The incident, which occurred while Chinese vessels were attempting to intercept Philippine ships near the shoal, resulted in a destructive damage to a Chinese warship and coast guard vessel. In the video published by Global times stated that Philippine Coast Guard ship four four zero six conducted highly dangerous maneuvers on Chinese law enforcement vessels during its intrusion into waters near China's Huangyan Dao in the South China Sea on August 11.
In response, Philippines Department of Foreign affairs says, the Philippines bears no responsibility for the collision, between a Chinese navy vessel and a China Coast Guard ship in Bajo de Masinloc this week, calling it an unfortunate outcome, but not one caused by Philippine Coast Guard’s actions.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro reiterated the country's demand for China to pay for the damage to Philippines vessels and equipment last June 17, 2024, and to return firearms, equipment, and personal belongings of Filipino personnel that were seized.
June last year, armed with long knives and machetes, the Chinese coast guard personnel tried to beat the unarmed Filipinos, who resisted with their bare hands by parrying the blows and pushing back the Chinese. At least eight Philippine Navy sailors were injured after Chinese vessels sought to drive away their vessels on a rotation and resupply mission to Second Thomas Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
The troops, including one whose finger got cut off, were wounded during a confrontation with Chinese forces that rammed and towed their rigid hull inflatable boats, as they tried to reach grounded warship, the BRP Sierra Madre.
The Filipino troops were not able to complete the resupply mission, as Chinese coast guard personnel also seized firearms of the Filipino Navy, when they boarded one of the inflatable boats. This marked the first time, that China boarded a Philippine boat and conducted a search as reported.
