Papp Mátyás: Too Close to the Sun (2023)

A Too Close to the Sun című zongoraötös a harmadik nemzetközi Eduardas Balsys zeneszerzésversenyre készült, bemutatója 2023 november 18-án, Vilniusban volt.
A darab címe Ikarusz mitológiai történetére utal. A történet röviden arról szól, hogy Ikarusz és Daidalosz tollakból és viaszból szárnyakat építettek, hogy elszökhessenek egy szigetről, ahol fogva tartották őket. Daidalosz óva intette fiát, hogy túl magasra szálljon, mert a Nap megolvasztja a viaszt, de miután sikeresen felszálltak Ikaruszt megigézte a magasság és egyre közelebb és közelebb repült a Naphoz. A perzselő meleg megolvasztotta a viaszt és Ikarusz a tengerben lelte halálát.
A darab vibráló ritmikája ikaruszi feladat elé állítja az előadókat, feszegetve a virtuozitás határait.

The piano quintet Too Close to the Sun was written for the 3rd Eduardas Balsys International Composition Competition and was presented in Vilnius on 18 November 2023.
The title of the piece refers to the mythological story of Icarus. In short, the story is about Icarus and Daedalus building wings of feathers and wax to escape from an island where they were being held captive. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too high because the sun would melt the wax, but after they successfully took off, Icarus became mesmerised by the altitude and flew closer and closer to the sun. The scorching heat hardened the wax and Icarus died in the sea.
The vibrant rhythm of the piece sets the performers an Icarusian task, pushing the boundaries of virtuosity.
