Many of you, after experiencing a relationship with a Narcissist, might feel that they have completely forgotten about you. This feeling often stems from the way the relationship ended, perhaps through a sudden and brutal discard. You might have observed them moving on very quickly into new relationships, which can understandably lead to significant doubt about the entire time you spent with that person. It can make you question the authenticity of the connection, wondering, "Was any of it real?" The way they seem to effortlessly sweep you aside and continue as if nothing significant occurred, appearing completely unaffected or bothered, can be profoundly unsettling and even traumatic.

It is completely understandable to process this experience internally, perhaps thinking, "This person has absolutely no interest in me anymore." You might read comments from others who have seen their former Narcissist partners on dating applications or with new individuals, engaging in intimate relationships. This can reinforce the painful belief that you are no longer thought of at all.

However, the reality is often quite different. What appears as moving on is frequently a complex defense mechanism. When a Narcissist quickly enters new "situationships" with new Supply, they are often doing so, at least in part, to actively suppress or escape the memory of you. It is crucial to understand that this behavior is a form of running from their own internal reality and the feelings they cannot process.

If you shared a significant period of time with a Narcissist, perhaps even several years, a certain level of understanding and connection, to the extent they are capable, would have naturally developed. As we discussed previously, when a Narcissist decides to discard or move on, their actions are often aimed at causing pain and destruction. They specifically do not want you to believe that they still think about you or that they possess genuine feelings. They present a facade of being completely devoid of emotion.

It is a common misconception that Narcissists are these invincible beings entirely lacking in empathy. While it is true that they lack affective empathy, they do experience emotions, albeit often in a distorted or self-centered way. Beneath the carefully constructed exterior, they are often incredibly fragile individuals with very low self-esteem. They are easily hurt, and it is surprisingly easy to inflict what is known as a "narcissistic injury." This act of quickly moving on to new Supply is frequently a direct retaliation for perceived injuries you may have caused them.
