U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday called on Iranians to continue protesting and to remember the names of those responsible for abuses, saying that help was “on the way,” as Iran’s clerical leadership intensified its crackdown on the largest demonstrations the country has seen in years.
Iran accused Trump of encouraging political destabilization and inciting violence. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Iranian patriots, KEEP PROTESTING — TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! … HELP IS ON ITS WAY,” without specifying what assistance he was referring to.

When asked by reporters what he meant by the statement, Trump said they would have to “figure that out.” He added that military action remained among the options he was considering in response to Iran’s handling of the protests. “The killing looks like it’s significant, but we don’t know yet for certain,” Trump said after returning to the Washington area from Detroit, noting that he expected to receive a briefing on the situation later Tuesday. “We’ll act accordingly,” he said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department urged American citizens to leave Iran immediately, including by traveling overland through Turkey or Armenia.
