This is 2022 and the chance is that your food and groceries expenses are far more than it was in 2019, 2020, and 2021. There has been a massive food price increase over the recent years, and many are asking questions about this. One intriguing thing about this price increase is that it’s not actually occurring in just Canada, UK, and the United States, it’s a global phenomenon.
We don’t want to see you frustrated when next you visit the grocery store, as your budget will not be enough. The high price of food is forcing consumers to make difficult decisions such as visiting food banks. The increase in food prices is also putting pressure on the food banks as a lot of people are unable to feed properly.
This brings us to the question, Why is this happening?

The average annual increase in food costs since the start of the 21st century has been between 2.0% and 3.0%. While restaurant food prices have grown 2.8%, grocery store prices have increased just 2.0%. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics most current Consumer Price Index data, food costs increased 10.4% between June 2021 and June 2022.
Almost all food items have increased in price. For instance, the cost of cereal increased by 15% in June compared to the same month last year, and the cost of also eggs rose by 33%. These price increases occur not just in the food items we mentioned but also in various ones such as grains, vegetable oils, butter, pasta, cattle, coffee, and a few more.
The price rises have impacted all.
It's not unexpected that many families are curious about why food costs are growing and how this may affect their food expenses. Consumers currently seeing the greatest strain on their home budgets in a generation are all trying to understand what could be the cause. Aside from some consumers, some experts also link these factors as some of the causes of the food price upsurge we are facing in 2022.
There are number of reasons why food prices are increase. Let’s start with the Covid-19 pandemic. We are all aware of how the 2020 pandemic affected many things, including food prices. During the pandemic, there was an increased food cost of 3.3% in 2020. A 4.4% increase in meat, fish, poultry, and eggs was mostly responsible for this. Dairy products contributed significantly to the increase, increasing by 3.8%.
