“I remember coming out to mom as gay and her asking me, ‘Tu Trans to nahi hai na.’ Scared in that minute, I said ‘No.’ Deep inside she knew the truth, and she was scared- not by the fact that was Trans, but worried about how society would treat me- the representation of the trans community is so stereotyped. Society assumes that just because you are from the LGBTQIA+ community, you cannot be financially independent to pay your own bills. And this is one thing I really want to talk more about through my platform- throw light upon the prejudice we go through not just in personal spaces but also professional settings. According to Axis Max Life Insurance India Protection Quotient 7.0, Financial security of the LGBTQIA+ community has also declined, dropping from 42 in IPQ 6.0 to 39 in IPQ 7.0. Rising concerns around the untimely death of a breadwinner, medical costs, and managing household budgets are some of the biggest worries within the community. This is why we need to support the LGBTQIA+ community, by standing up for them in whatever manner we can, to ensure they are financially independent because when you have control over your own money, you can live with dignity and respect, without depending on others or being limited by what society expects.”
