A lovely compilation of French Post Impressionist Henri Le Sidaner's most important paintings.

The Frenchman Henri Eugene Augustine Le Sidaner was a famous artist of the 19th century. His individual use of light and his particular painterly approach to nature were strongly influenced by impressionist artists. This is why he is often referred to in art literature as "the last Impressionist". Le Sidaner's best-known works are paintings that deal with the effects of light at dusk or in fog. Alfred Sisley, the owner of the gallery "Soir", was a great admirer of these works and by exhibiting these paintings in the "Soir" he made a considerable contribution to the success of his protégé Le Sidaner.

Soon after his birth in 1862 in Port Louis, Mauritius, the Le Sidaner family returned to their native France. At the age of 18, Le Sidaner passed the entrance examination of the renowned École des Beaux-Arts in the cultural city of Paris. Being allowed to study art here was a sure guarantee for a good career in the future. The young man was taught at the influential academy by the painter Alexandre Cabanel, among others. Great role models of the talented student were the Impressionists, who were very popular and progressive at that time. After his graduation, Le Sidaner moved to the coast of Normandy and lived and worked for a long time in the idyllic small town of Etaples. In 1891 he participated with his paintings for the first time in an exhibition at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. It was his breakthrough in the French art scene. A little later Le Sidaner's work was awarded a bronze medal at the World Exhibition, which was also held in Paris. In the same year, after a short stay in Beauvais, he moved to Gerberoy sur l'Oise. There he met followers of Symbolism. After his move, Le Sidaner mainly painted garden scenes, still lifes and views of old houses. His motifs were mostly wrapped in twilight, which gave them a special charm.

1905 was a particularly productive year for the Frenchman. He had travelled to Venice to find new inspirations and to be able to concentrate in peace on his work as a painter. These paintings were exhibited in London and Paris and both the public and the strict art critics reacted positively. Le Sidaner was a productive, respected and successful painter until the end of his life. He died in 1939 at the age of 77 in Versailles.
