When Edgar "Ed" Harrell joined the Marine Corps in 1943 he had no idea that he'd be a seagoing Marine. Assigned to the USS Indianapolis Harrell would experience combat multiple times aboard the ship, earning seven of the ten battle stars of the Indianapolis.

While undergoing repairs in San Francisco a large container was placed aboard the Indianapolis. Unknown to the men onboard it contained uranium and crucial components of the first atomic bomb to be delivered in secret to Tinian Island.

After successfully delivering their cargo the Indianapolis headed towards Leyte, but a Japanese submarine was lying in wait and hit the starboard side of the ship with two torpedoes, stranding 900 men at sea. The next four and a half days just under 600 men would die from dehydration, hypothermia, shark attacks and saltwater poisoning.

Edgar Harrell passed away on May 8, 2021 - He was the last living Marine who served aboard the USS Indianapolis.
