Back in the hazy days of the early 2010s, the UK government needed to kickstart its residential solar industry, and so it launched the Feed-in Tariff (FiT). This scheme paid homeowners generously for switching to solar, and gave people lucrative contracts lasting 20 or 25 years.

But why did the rates gradually decrease? Why did the scheme eventually get put to bed in 2019? And what followed?

In this video, our solar experts Charlie and Josh will answer these questions and several more, as they put on their metaphorical history hats and explore the past. They also take a quick glance at the Smart Export Guarantee, which means present-day solar homes can still get paid handsomely for their exported energy.
