Freemasonry prepared Latter-day Saints for the endowment, it didn’t create it.

Yes, Joseph Smith became a Freemason weeks before introducing the endowment in May 1842.

And yes, some elements are similar. That’s the headline people stop at.

But they’re fundamentally more different than they are similar and even the parts supposedly “stolen” from Freemasonry often have biblical or ancient roots.

Freemasonry is about creating a brotherhood while the endowment is about preparing men and women to enter into the presence of God and become like Him.

Many of the shared elements can find precent in the biblical or ancient world, as both the endowment and Freemasonry draw inspiration from the ancient Israelite temple, so these shared ingredients shouldn’t surprise us.

Priestly clothing, found in the bible.

Sacred covenants, bible.

Ritual gestures, bible.

Handclasps, bible.

The similarities are fairly limited and superficial, while the even the basic narratives are different. Freemasonry includes detailed lectures about the construction of Solomon’s temple, while the endowment tells the story of Creation, Fall, and Atonement.

The earliest saints who were endowed were also freemasons and none of them saw the endowment as copying freemasonry.

In fact, some of them saw the endowment as restoring or “correcting” elements that had been corrupted or lost.

Others saw it as preparing them for the endowment, as most of them came from a low-church protestant background and were unaccustomed to elaborate rituals.

God often teaches through familiar languages and symbols. So Joseph’s environment certainly informed how the endowment was expressed.

But even though God used similar tools, He built a completely different house. His house.
