Is there a way that I could tell if my child has Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

The disorder can take on two different types, says Dr. Patrice Harris, a child psychiatrist and past president of the American Medical Association. The first is hyperactivity--that's the children who are always on "go." Parents sometimes compare it to a motor that they can't turn off.

The second type is the inattentive type. That's when children have difficulty paying attention, particularly in school or doing tasks they do not like. Dr. Harris cautions, though, that just having these two symptoms does not mean a child necessarily has ADHD.

But when hyperactivity and/or inattentiveness is interfering with a child's ability to make friends or succeed at home or school, that's when a child needs to be seen by a professional.
