Bowl-O-Rama retained the trackball control scheme that made Capcom Bowling approachable. The player spins the trackball to set speed and direction of the bowling ball, with simple button inputs handling options or confirming play. Standard configurations supported up to two players alternating turns, making it suitable for both solo and competitive play.

The game features three distinct modes:

Regulation Bowling mirrors standard ten-pin bowling rules, offering a traditional scoring format for players seeking a straightforward experience.

Flash-O-Matic introduces a dynamic scoring overlay. A flashing score value scrolls across the screen, and the value “locks in” when the ball first makes pin contact. A strike rewards the full locked value, a spare grants half, and an open frame defaults to basic pin count. This mode creates unusually high-scoring outcomes compared to conventional bowling.

BlackJack blends bowling with card-game mechanics. Each throw resets a full rack of pins, with players allowed up to three throws per frame. The goal is to knock down exactly 21 pins. Reaching 21 doubles the frame’s accumulated “pot,” while overshooting results in no score. Aces are represented by single pins, which may count as either one or eleven toward the total, echoing the flexibility of traditional blackjack rules.

Together, these modes distinguished Bowl-O-Rama from its predecessor by adding gambling-style risk-and-reward systems on top of the familiar trackball bowling base. The game was designed to increase replay value, keeping casual players entertained while also offering arcade operators a profitable update to proven hardware.
