After an amazing week on the beautiful island of Cuba it was time to head back to Holguin airport and ready ourselves for the long "red-eye" flight back to London. We'd been blessed all week with absolutely perfect weather but on the morning of our departure there were a few clouds building over the hills. By the time we had arrived at the airport, checked in and passed through security the sky was fairly overcast, made it through just in time to catch the arrival of our aircraft inbound from London, which was 40mins late. It hadn't been on the ground before the heavens opened. A tropical storm had just rolled in which completely drenched the airport... Quite literally. Parts of the roof had come down and it was pouring inside. Loading of our aircraft, the cargo & luggage was halted due to the heavy rain. All the ground staff outside were taking refuge beneath the wings & undercarriage, quite entertaining to watch actually. But then came the thunder & lightening. Incredible amounts of lightening surrounding the airport. This lasted a good hour before it blew away and finally boarding could commence, some 1 hour 45mins behind scheduled. Once all onboard, doors were shut and we were on our way quickly, straight onto the runway and backtracked for a north easterly RWY05 departure. Climbed out towards the North West and the Bahamas. Some beautiful views of the Bahamas below and the peaceful islands. Continued routing up the east coast of the US towards Newfoundland before night fell when we turned East to cross the Atlantic. It was only dark outside for just over 3 hours before the sunrise started making itself noticed out the window. Passing over the southern most points of Ireland before we began our descent towards the south coast and entered a holding pattern for around 10mins until finally joining the approach for RWY08R at Gatwick. A very dull, grey, misty morning at London Gatwick. Looked more like landing on a January morning rather than the first of June! Temperature of just 12 degrees, certainly felt a lot cooler than the 30 degree departure from Holguin!
This aircraft, G-TCXC is Thomas Cooks newest A330, only delivered to Thomas Cook on April 29th from previous owner Avianca and coincidentally the exact same aircraft that took me across to Cuba the previous week. A departure in May and arrival at Gatwick in June.
