We talked to a Houston-area real estate agent about the importance of having renters insurance if you live in an apartment or rental house.

What is renters insurance?

Renters insurance pays to replace your personal belongings if they’re stolen or damaged by a fire or other event. The owner of your apartment building or house has insurance on the structure, but it won’t protect your personal property.

What else does renters insurance help with?

If you have to move into temporary housing while your apartment or rental house is being repaired, renters insurance will pay for a hotel and food. Renters insurance also includes liability coverage that pay if a visitor is hurt on your property.

How much does renters insurance cost?

It cost about $15 a month, according to the Insurance Information Institute. If you’re wondering how that fits into your budget, imagine the cost of relocating and replacing your personal belongings after a storm or fire destroys your rental property.

What about floods?

Home and renters insurance don’t typically pay for flood damages. But you can buy a separate policy that covers floods. Ask your agent about flood coverage.
