TRIMET: Philipp Schlüter on Energy Challenges and Bridging the Gap to Renewables

Philipp Schlüter, CEO of TRIMET Aluminium SE and Chair of European Aluminium, discusses the pressing energy challenges facing the aluminium industry during the 2024 Autumn Meeting in Brussels. Highlighting TRIMET’s consumption of six terawatt-hours of electricity annually across three German plants, he explains the company’s proactive measures to reduce production by two-thirds, starting in 2021—prior to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Philipp underscores the structural energy supply issues in Germany and Europe and the need to grow energy supply to meet rising electricity demand driven by industrial electrification. He calls for interim solutions to bridge the gap while renewable energy infrastructure is developed, noting that in Germany, building a renewable energy site takes six to seven years.
