Kai (Karl) Reinhold Donner born in 1888 was a Finnish linguist, ethnographer and politician. He carried out expeditions to the Nenets people (Samoyeds) in Siberia between 1911–1914.

Studying the Finno-Ugrian peoples of Siberia had become an important part of the "national sciences" — Finno-Ugrian philology and ethnology, folklore studies, and archaeology — that arose in answer to the interest in national "roots" that followed the "National Awakening" of the mid-19th century.

Here I present photographs of his expedition in 1912 to the River Ket, a tributary of the River Ob. The Ket River has a length of 1,621 kilometres (1,007 mi) freezes in late October or early November and stays under the ice until late April or early May.
The Ket once served as one of the main river routes in Siberia. A portage near its headwaters allowed one to cross from the Ob River basin to the Yenisei River basin.
