This week we will be exploring a lost and enchanting part of Tarrytown which existed on the southern side, before the busy thruway pushed through in 1954. It was a charming area, rich in local lore and legend that went by the sweet name of Pennybridge.
Picture this if you will... Little cottages with smoke rising from their chimneys...rolling hills colored with lush trees...a sleepy beaver pond emitting the sounds of playful pups hitting their tails on logs...no cars, no noise, no highway...just a little "lap of land" with rolling hills and kind townsfolk making their way by fields and brook... Settlers who came to Pennybridge in the mid-19th century to carve out their homes were of Irish, Dutch and German stock and they worked on the largest estates that were creating the millionaire colony of the Southern part of Tarrytown.
It existed for 100 years from the 1850s to the 1950s and boasted it's own community consisting of a library, school, Inn, and shops. All are long gone except the school which was known as The Pennybridge school and lay abandoned for three decades. Today is the Elizabeth Mascia Child Care center.
Legend says the area became known as Pennybridge because a penny toll was collected for each person or head of cattle that crossed a wooden bridge that carried Broadway across the Mill Brook named for a mill on its banks that is now known as Sheldon brook. The farmland was fenced on either side and the only way to drive cattle South to New York was to pay the toll and cross the bridge. Today this is all that is left of any sign of the penny bridge and brook... Who wants to take a walk through Pennybridge?
