I still hear her voice,
a soft thing that lives in ordinary sounds:
the kettle’s small protest, the way a bus sighs at the corner,

a melody I never learned to turn off.

Sometimes it is practical, instructions left half-finished,
the cadence of a laugh that used to smooth the edges of my day.
Sometimes it is a whisper that undoes me: a memory wrapped in sound,
a sentence I swear she said though the room is empty.
I reach for it and find only the echo, warm as breath, gone like weather.

Nights are worst; the dark is an amplifier.
Her voice becomes everything I miss pretending not to miss.
I talk back sometimes, foolish and small, to the place she once filled,
and the silence answers with its patient, honest blankness.

Still, when the world grows soft and the hour thins,
her voice keeps me company,
a ghost that comforts and breaks me both,
reminding me how love can linger where nothing else will stay.
