Wrist locks work! And you can find them everywhere. Training with Shihan Cameron Quinn

Where there is a grab, a hold and a hand, there is a wrist lock. Today, we are looking at a few possibilities.

My dad taught me my first wrist lock when I was a youngster, a kote-gaeshi he learned as part of his unarmed training in the army before WWII. Frank Everett, my first instructor, was a jujutsu black belt so taught a lot of the jujutsu fundamentals to all new students. Of course we experimented with wrist locks for many years and worked on what worked for us and what didn't.

In the mid-1980s, the wonderful Professor Wally Jay was in Brisbane and kindly did a seminar at my dojo that really clarified a lot for us. The gentle kind-heartedness of Professor Wally was something special and was a perfect balance to the devastating precision of his martial arts teaching and training. I hope I am a fraction of the virtuous master of the arts Professor Jay was until his passing well into his nineties. We continued to correspond (pre-Internet) for many years after our initial meeting. His hand-written letters were not only full of lessons, they were, like the correspondence of Kyokushin's Shihan Bobby Lowe, works of art with very beautiful, almost calligraphic, hand-writing.

In addition, the flow of the five wrist locks here was shown to me more recently by my friend Paul Cale. It really helped me to cement a few disconnected thoughts I had been working with. I probably got the order wrong though. But there is no mistaking the five locks, regardless of the order.
