Simultaneous Two-Sword Draw

About three years ago, during the motion-capture shoot for Ghost of Yotei, we tried things like a simultaneous two-sword draw as reference at the client’s request. In actual Tenshinryu, however, we do not use two long swords to begin with (the standard pairing is a long sword and a wakizashi), and simultaneous drawing is not a technique handed down in the school.

This was carried out at the creators' request, but the 10th-generation Grandmaster of Tenshinryu, who holds full menkyo, optimized everything as far as possible for practical combative movement. In traditional martial arts, a menkyo is the school’s formal guarantee. In other words, as a martial art honed in real combat over roughly 400 years, the Grandmaster’s skill is fully viable in actual encounters, and the license attests that he has completely mastered—and can embody—the system’s techniques, tactics, and strategy.

This applies to both Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei: not all of the movements are direct motion capture of Tenshin-ryu, and many elements have been heavily adapted for gameplay, so it is not “Tenshin-ryu exactly as is.” However, I believe one reason so many people love this work is that it beautifully balances the martial traditions forged by history with game-ready realism as entertainment.*What Is Tenshinryu?
