I don't even need to guess that Planet Cannon (and its higher sibling) is likely the most wanted weapon for Ranger players. This is another case of an overpowered weapon like the Air Raider's Rule of God on 4.1: in real gameplay is seldom useful.
The problems with the Planet Cannon are:
the shooting animation is slow and long as hell, and hitting moving targets is difficult, particularly small ones
no zoom, so unless your other weapon has or the enemy is huge, it's difficult to aim properly
you can blow up your vehicles (see at 12:47, and no you don't even need to be that close, I lost a mission after 40 minutes because of this)
Here it does work quite well. The hives are static and usually will be without aggroing enemies. If you're using a vehicle fast enough you can even try 1 or 2 shots back against hordes once you reach a map corner, its penetration is useful too. And its damage at 40k+ per shot is obviously helpful.
The weapons I used were the level 104 Planet Sniper Canon, the 80 KFF70, the 79 ZEXR in the backpack and the 105 Varius TZ4. I never had used the KFF70 before, or any other KFF for that matter. The logic was choosing a sniper that would kill reasonably fast along the ZEXRs. It's a bit weird to use, but it worked. Any other sniper but MR111 will work, Blazer is not good either due to lack of zoom. ZEXR is awesome here, the best turret. No running is enough to get away from spiders here, so you need a vehicle. Varius is pretty fast (faster than AR's main campaign Blackers) and has enough armor to withstand a few mistakes you make.
Unlike with AR you should NOT go for attacks to the main hive. Instead, get rid of all the small ones and the cosmos, then deal with the main hive.
ZEXRs are extremely inefficient with buildings around them. Since the inner buildings are very useful for protection, I destroyed the first row of them outside the map. This will create a larger area where spiders can land and the ZEXRs will be MUCH more efficient. Boring but essential, otherwise ZEXRs will do little to no damage to spiders and you'll need a lot of map laps to kill all incoming spiders.
Also try to destroy lamps, traffic signs, and rails when you can. The Vario weapon is explosive, blowing your tank is not that difficult, believe me. So destroy these to avoid "happenings" (see at 04:37 or instance).
When going for the huge hive, stay back from the start position, wait as much as you can, then run away. The left side is safer to run away, as the worst hives are nearer the right side, although some hives are nearer the left side of the map.
Running away is key here, if you try to be a smart ass, you'll generally die.
If you're far enough in a corner, and all spiders are packed way back you can use Planet Cannon to get a few lucky kills. Don't try your luck.
Blue Spiders will hit you from more than half the map away, King Spiders from almost the other side of the map.
To aim Planet Cannon, use KFF70 to aim where you want, then switch weapons without moving.
The start was a pretty bad one, by far the worst of my successes and tries, but it's good that way so that people can see that even a bad start can mean a good end.
Can you make a weapons farming run like for Air Raider, destroying first the huge hive and milk the King Spiders?
Yes, but this run took 90 minutes, one like that will likely go into the 150 minutes. Not fun. Better to farm in split screen using AR more productive.
