Iranian drones are known as "kamikaze" drones. That is because they are destroyed in the attack. A small sad fact about Kamikaze. Japanese air force loaded the planes fully with explosives and they will crash it and explode on Allied naval ships.

There are two types of drones that have been supplied by iran to Russia. Important point here is Iran is still strongly denying it. They are Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicles and Mohajer-6 types of drones.

They will fly in circles over a given target area. They will keep circling for many hours waiting to target a specific building or location. They will then dive down towards the ground and explode on impact causing great damage.

Some sources say that Ukrainian forces have at times struggled to track the incoming drones.

The drones were probably relatively low in technology. They are assembled from parts that could be bought easily online and guided by a civilian GPS system. That is why the tactics used is not to launch one or two but as a swarm. That is 7 or 8 assuming that a few of them will fulfil their task.

The latest Mohajer, 6 can fly up to 18,000 feet in the air. So it exceeds the range of many short-range air defense systems in terms of altitude.

During the intial phase of Putin’s Ukraine war Russia used the entire range of its long-range precision weapons: the Kh, 55, and Kh, 101, cruise missiles fired by strategic bombers. They launced Kalibr cruise missiles from their ships in the sea. Then from the ground they launched Iskander missiles.
The cost of the Kh, 101, missile is 13 million dollars. That is more than 100 crore rupees. The Caliber is $6.5 million that is about 54 crores. The Iskander cost 3 million dollars that is about 25 crores.

So these kamikaze drones provide Russia with an expendable and cost-effective alternative. They don’t have to use its precious and expensive aircraft and cruise and ballistic missiles. Even if these drones were shot down, they would still empty Ukraine’s limited stock of surface-to-air missiles.
